Net Neutrality Is about Government Control of the Internet

The list of government agencies compromised by hackers continues to grow. The FCC agenda that voted for those regulations in is less about privacy and consumer protection than it is about government control of the Internet. In receiving court approval of the privacy rules, the FCC reclassified broadband Internet access as a public utility.

Public utilities do not innovate. Nor do they seek to better their service for consumers. The rapid advance of technology lets the Internet evolve continually, and this innovation is threatened if the Internet is to be regulated or run like a public utility.

Public utilities do not compete against other entities, and are regulated as monopolies. But the Internet is not structured that way: Most homes in the US have access to broadband Internet at lower rates than consumers pay in Europe, where the service is price-regulated. Public utilities do not innovate, nor do they seek to better their service for consumers.

There are two clear paths the Internet might take, depending on which sides wins this battle over having a truly free, private Internet or one controlled by the government as a public utility. Supporters have communicated exactly what they want. There can be no confusion about what the net neutrality agenda is all about: But if they win their dream, consumers will be the real losers in this battle over Internet control. Little do they know that people are hacking into their system as we speak. No, the government should not control the Internet. Those that venture into the Internet world, should expect to take the good with the bad. There are very bad things on the Internet and with that, individuals should take it upon themselves the filter what they and their families are able to access.

The Internet should be self regulated by the individual, not the government. The government should have no control over what is said or done on the Internet, nor they should be able to or allowed to censor anything. This goes against the entire idea of free speech.

While there are certainly some disturbing things on the Internet, censorship is not the answer. Government control of the internet would allow the government to determine what content users may access. Any blocking or prohibiting of accessing sites is arguably censorship.

Also, since the internet is not a government entity nor essential to the core function of the government, the government has not right to take control of the internet. Trying to control the Internet would be a monumental task and cost a fortune to implement.

There are countries that have tried to control what their citizens have access to and it is considered to be oppressive and hostile. It is also ineffective because the only people they are able to truly control are the ones that already follow the government doctrines.

I believe the government should not control the Internet. I believe the people who misuse technology should be sought out and charged via our current judicial system. I do not believe the government has any right to control the Internet and should refrain from stepping on anymore rights by seeking out information that does not belong to them.

The government has no right using the internet to put their watchful eyes inside of peoples personal lives or homes. If they do that than what will be next? Regulations on the air that we breathe and taxation on the oxygen that people take in on a daily basis?

The government's so called fake super powers are getting a little bit out of control. I mean look at the terrorist that hacked his way into the white house and became president? The government should not be controlling what I do on the internet. I think they should only control a persons internet data if the reason to believe that that person is a threat to our nation.

But not many people are a threat. Security is important but I do not want people looking into my private and personal life. The government should not control the internet at all. The internet is fine as it is right now. Those who do violate the law already get penalized, so I see no concrete reason as to why the government should take control of the world wide web.

This would also result in the violation of people's privacy. Freedom of speech is already so far limited in comparison to when this country was founded. To control what people do on the internet further hinders freedom of speech. No one should be afraid to have an opinion misinterpreted as a threat.

Censorship is the death of freedom and it needs to be stopped.

It can lead to suicide
